Craig Alexander Newmark was born in Morristown, New Jersey on the 6th of December, 1952. He attended the local Morristown High School, and then finished his college degree with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the Case Western Reserve University.
It was not until 1995 when Craig was working at Shwab that he started Craigslist as an email list for friends and co-workers. He initially meant it to provide events happening in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. In 1999, he retired from IT consulting to pursue Craigslist full-time. He was aided by Paul Risenhoover who set up Majordomo in 1996, and was involved in the systems administration part of Craigslist. Paul also hosted the earlier versions of Craigslist on his LINUX server. Christina Murphy fashioned the direction of Craigslist and made it known in the community. Weezy Muth was responsible for streamlining the processing of the site, and was in charge of the posting procedures.
What started out as a little project in Craig’s living room has turned into one the busiest sites on the Internet; by connecting people through finding jobs and opportunities – all entwined within a culture of Internet trust. Craig is still connected with Craigslist, but devotes most of his time now with a variety of community efforts, and is active with the customer service department of his founded company.
Craigslist is now a major webhosting site that offers opportunities for jobs, goods, services, housing, romance, advice – just about everything. The site carries a .org domain extension because it noncommercial by nature. It does make money, however, out of job advertisements and brokered apartment listings. It does not make a profit out of the transactions of whoever meets up and does business over the site. This, therefore, makes them not liable for whatever negative outcomes that may result as well.
Caution is advised when dealing with other users on the site, since there is no way that Craigslist can virtually screen each post or applicant. There are other sites on the Internet that play third party to transactions done on their site; they require an escrow or bond from the party posting the job offer. This works as a security for the one who is contracted to do the job. If there is a problem with their transaction, that site can mediate between the two parties to establish completion of the job stipulated. For this, they take a percentage out of the earnings of the contracted party. Craigslist does not practice this custom at all.
