In a world where anyone can be reached with just the touch of a button or the click of a mouse, it is important to understand the tools of the trade. Am I talking about programming or logics and design? No. I’m talking about selling. How to entice a client to trust your products and services above all the rest. Think of it this way, pretend you’re a door to door salesman. What is the first thing someone will notice about you when they answer the door? What is the first thing you notice about them? It will always be your appearance. How you look and present yourself is the first step in getting in the door so to speak. This is the same basic concept for internet marketing. Your website is your wardrobe. It is the first thing a potential client sees and it sets the tone of the connection.
Once you have set the right tone and have the client’s attention, now you have your pitch. Ask yourself if this is the right demographic for your product. For example you wouldn’t sell a bikini to an 60 year old grandmother who is a homebody, would you? No, you would sell them a nice summer blouse and a comfortable pair of pants or skirt. In other words make sure the product or services suits the clients needs. Why, you ask. Remember a sell is not just a sell, it is the possibility of word of mouth. Let’s say you’re service is a financial planning service geared towards retirement. Your demographic is ages 25 to 40, male and female with the potential for earning no less than fifty thousand a year. Now let’s say you are contacted by a 63 year old male who is looking to retire early. He has been living pay check to pay check his entire life. What do you do? At this point you have 2 choices, first is of course is make the sale. Your product doesn’t fit into his budget but you have dazzled him with all the information and he is ready to sign. Later he realizes not only is he unable to afford your service but he is locked into a contract he can’t get out of. The second option you have is to redirect him to a business associate who owns a site dedicated to his demographic. The second option allows you to create two business connects through word of mouth. The associate you sent the client to will send business your way and the client will let others know you are a person of integrity. Let me repeat that so that the point is clear, a person of integrity. That is a difficult thing to find in today’s market where fast is thought to be the best and overnight success is thought to be the only way.
Now that you have a good appearance and a good reputation, you need a follow up. This requires research. Without a doubt, what is new today is old tomorrow. Does this mean to change your proven products and services? No, it means keep up with the new that follows under your field. If you are offering a service that requires programming, you aren’t just going to use DOS, are you? No, you will either learn all the latest languages or hire someone who does.
What it boils down to is this, today’s society has changed in the way we do business however the basics are now and always will be the same. Number one is appearance. Number two is reputation and last but most certainly not least is the products and services themselves. When you are planning on creating any kind of business remember nothing is more important than the basic tools you already have.
