In today’s economy there is little wonder as to why people are looking for that rainbow with the pot of gold on the internet. The job market of today is different than it was 20 years ago where a pension was earned along with a gold watch at the end of loyal service to a company. Let’s not forget the rising prices in gas, college tuition, clothing and even after school programs. While there is money to be made on the internet there are also dangers that most people wouldn’t have even considered until approximately five years ago. One of the major scams on the rise is Identity Theft. It takes as little as a name and birth date to get a hold of your most valuable information. Identity Theft is so bad the Department of Justice has dedicated an entire division to catching the criminals.

There are some ways you can protect yourself. One of the ways is to make sure your personal email account doesn’t contain any vital information.. For example on the secret question pick a pet’s name or favorite author.. Do not choose the mother’s maiden name or fathers name or any other key personal information.

If you receive something in the mail and it says it’s a grand prize for lots of money, do not fill out the forms that contain all the personal and pertinent information. Contact the Better Business Bureau to find out if the company is legitimate. Also try going on the internet and looking the company up. Chances are there will be a blog about it somewhere.

So how can all this information help you in your quest to make money on the internet? When you are going to be dealing with clients personal information, the door locks are just as important as the design. During the design phase of your website consider getting in touch with an internet security company like Lifelock and registering with them through a consultant. Another way to make your clients feel secure is to go through Paypal to get paid. Paypal has a reputation of being a highly secure site. The more security you show on your website the better off you and your clients information will be.

While Identity Theft is on the rise, there is another scam that is used to approach its victims head on. These are call Affiliate scams. There are over eleven million different sites that pop up when you search for Affiliate marketing. For those who don’t know what affiliate marketing is here is the simplest way I can think of to describe it. You have been given the chance to attach your name to a particular website. Now, you market the site through your own and lead customers the original site and finally the client purchases the product whereby you are then paid a percentage for the purchase. It is a basic commission set up.

There are websites that will allow you to attach your URL for free. Then there are those that make you pay a fee for attaching your URL. Both of which can be scams. So how do you detect Affiliate scams. First and foremost they need to have a detailed website with information about products and services. During your research of the website you should find a way to contact a person. If you don’t then you should consider this a probable scam and walk away. Another thing to look for is positive feedback about the site. If there isn’t any, walk away. Last but not least you should make sure the site is free to Affiliates. A general rule to follow is this, if you have to pay a fee in order to become an affiliate through the website then it’s a good chance the owner is just about making money off of you and whoever else he has as an affiliate. You will probably never see a dime.
